Role of army chiefs and Establishment in killings and cover-up remains unanswered
The publication of the Report of the Bloody Sunday Inquiry, more commonly known as the Saville Inquiry, has brought to light, once again, the murderous and brutal lengths the British capitalist state is prepared to go to defend its interests. The Saville Inquiry, which cost nearly £200 million and lasted 12 years, has officially confirmed what everyone has known all along - that those who were murdered by the British Army on Bloody Sunday were innocent. What the inquiry has failed to expose or even attempt to explain, is what was the role of the Edward Heath Tory government in 1972 and the British army chiefs, in the events of Bloody Sunday and in the subsequent cover-up. On these crucial questions, the Saville Inquiry is silent and has failed. In that respect, it is another form of an official cover-up of the role of the British state in the events of that day and their aftermath.
Dissident republicanism - Nothing to offer but a return to sectarian killings
According to the Police Federation of Northern Ireland, dissident republican groups have been responsible for carrying out an average of two attacks a day since the beginning of the year. These attacks range from high profile car bombings targeted against the police and army to so-called punishment shootings in Catholic working class areas. Regardless of how “successful” they are in the attacks they carry out they have nothing to offer but a return to sectarian killings.
Riot police attack workers’ protest at Durban stadium
South African riot police fired tear gas on hundreds of security stewards protesting against wage cuts, 90 minutes after the match between Germany and Australia in Durban.
“They’re giving us 205 rand [around €20]; we started at 12 noon and worked until midnight”, Sikhumbuzo Mnisi, a 44-year-old from Durban claimed, according to the New York Times, “Different things have been said to people, but we were promised 1,500 rand (around 140 Euro) per day”. He reported: “We started to protest because we wanted to negotiate.”

According to some Greek protesters Ireland is not like Greece - one banner on a demonstration read, “This is not Ireland, we will fight”. Finance Minister, Brian Lenihan, says the same but from a different stand point. He keeps repeating that Ireland is not like Greece in the hope that such an economic collapse will not happen in Ireland, precisely because he is afraid of a similar revolt of the Irish working class.
Why public sector cuts are not inevitable
The Tories claim that massive cuts are necessary because of New Labour's excessive public spending on services and welfare. This is a giant con trick, which every capitalist party - including New Labour - is colluding in. Nothing could be further from the truth. Under New Labour, as under the Tories before them, public spending on measures that decrease poverty has fallen back and as a result inequality and - for much of New Labour's tenure - poverty, have increased.

For a one day school and college strike - for real jobs and training
Seven campuses of the Northern Regional College are set to close as a result of the Assembly Executives cuts. They are located at Portrush, Ballymoney, Ballymena, Larne, Antrim and Newtownabbey. This is a serious attack on the people of the North East, especially for young people who will be deprived of local access to education. It will mean only four campuses stretching from Coleraine, Magherafelt, Ballymena and Newtownabbey will remain to cater for 15,000 students, with fewer staff as a result of job cuts.
Oil spill is 'worst environmental disaster' to hit US
The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico following the fatal explosion on the BP leased Deepwater Horizon oil rig has exceeded the Exxon Valdez catastrophe of 1989, when eleven million gallons of crude oil devastated the pristine Alaskan coastline.
A White House energy official described the Gulf of Mexico spill as the worst environmental disaster ever to affect the USA. So far, all of BP's efforts to plug the leaking well - located 5,000 feet below the surface of the sea - have failed.
